Painted Glass
“I start with a neutral form called a “blank”, which is a sandblasted egg shaped blown glass bubble. I use the blank as a three-dimensional canvas for a special high temperature silica based enamel paint. It’s kind of a backwards way of working because the painting comes first and the sculpting later. Once painted the blank is warmed up to 1000 F, then picked up on a blowpipe, and encased in molten glass so that the paint is sandwiched between layers of glass. From there the object is blown and hot sculpted.” -Thor
